In recent 20 years, more adults are becoming pet owners given that people worldwide have little problems supporting themselves with the relatively stable economic develoment. And here comes along a phenomenon, that is more children are also getting their pets as they wished because their parents believe that letting them take care of a pet can cultivate young children a good sense of responsibility. However, I do not think it is the best way of promoting their responsibility for reasons as follows.
Indeed, it’s undeniable that most people now are having better life compared with the life people had 50 years ago. Many are confident that they are financially capable of supporting not only the family but also a pet, yet the developing and expanding of pet market has been unimaginable fast. The pet-related products, from basic ones, such as pet food and pet house to some entertaining-oriented products (pet toys, clothes etc.) have varied greatly. All owners want to offer their precious pets a sweet and comfortable environment to live, which leads to the pursuit of high quality merchandise. And it can be quite costly. Plus, those advertisers keep reminding their target customers of what a healthy as well as happy life their pets can enjoy after purchasing the products. So it unavoidably gets harder to afford everything for a pet daily, not to mention how expensive it can be if one’s pet gets sick and needs to go to the pet hospitals. Therefore, considering that it will easily become an extra burden for a family, it’s not neccessary to cultivate a child a sense of duty in this way.
Also, having children keep pets may actually have negative influence on the emotions of children. Once children keep their own pets, truly they may have payed a lot attention and converns on their pets and love them from the bottom of the heart, but this close bonds they build with pets may, on the other hand, be destoryed when their pets passed away due to the age or accidents. Most children are too young to handle the separation, let alone to understand the meaning of death. in this case, the death of their pet can be heavily traumatizing. Children may find it difficult to accept the truth that they cannot see their lively dogs or cats any more. Such abruption of an intimate connection is very likely to be a block and mental shadow for a young man to build up close relationships with anyone in the future.
All in all, the bright side of keeping pets has been promoted all over the place. Especially, for a young child, he can learn to take a good care of another creatures’ life and be responsible for it; however, it needs to be kept in mind that there are also plenty of downsides on such method if parents are expecting to teach their children about responsibility in this way. So I insist that looking after pets is not the best approach for a child to foster a sense of responsibility because of high financial investments and the side effect it brings on children's feelings.
